In the ACT, there are many parameters which constitute a regulated (protected) tree under the Urban forest ACT 2023;
- 8 metres tall
- 8 metres wide in canopy spread
-1 metre trunk circumference at 1.4 metres above natural ground level
-A dead native tree that at 1.4 metres above natural ground
level which has a trunk circumference of at least 1.88 metres
- Was planted no more than 5 years prior as a part of a canopy contribution agreement
- Is a listed tree as a part of the ACT Tree register (being identified as being of exceptional value)
A tree which meets these requirements but is not protected:
- dead (and not a native species)
-a recognized noxious or environmental weed according to the Pest Plants and Animals ACT 2005
Under the Urban forest ACT 2023, the work that can be done on the trees without a TAA (tree activity application) are as follows;
- Minor pruning of up to 100mm branch diameter, that does not significantly affect the shape of the tree
- Deadwood removal
-Non-invasive tree support systems
